In this tutorial we are going to learn how to play "Across 110th Street" as made famous by Bobby Womack. This seventies era funk track features a huge arrangement surrounded by strings, synths, a slammin' rhythm section and some really cool guitar melodies. While the guitar is the not the biggest part of the arrangement, buried in songs like this were always layers of guitars playing a variety of licks and chords. In this tutorial, I am going to take a single guitar approach teaching you many of those melodies and licks; along with some chords that you can play during the chorus. In the original recording, the guitar isn't super present in the choruses so we are going to play some chords locked in with the rhythm section.
I will be using a single guitar throughout the track, playing a mixture of octave melodies and chords. We will playing lots of octave melodies, in more of a jazz style then anything, and during the choruses I will switch to a funkier rhythm guitar part. All the guitar parts will be played with the same clean tone with some reverb and just a little bit of amp break up.
"Across 110th Street" is in the key of B minor, at 110 BPM, and in 4/4 time.
