Some time ago I found a guitar website which had tons of finger exercises to increase speed,cordination, and skill. It was titled, "Finger Exercises from Hell." If anybody still knows of that website could they please reply with the link. Also I've been playing for about 1 1/2 years and can play descently but I really want to increase my speed and get both hands in sync. So if you know of some really helpful exercises that I could do to help me with my guitar playing I would be very appreciative.

I too have been trying to build speed. Last time I asked at this board, most of what they sent me where:

Do that all over the fretboard, and try hammering them all on too.

If you like you can take a look at some of the stuff in my "blueprints" section. At first the exercises I have up don't seem like much in the way of difficulty, in fact they feel pretty easy to pull off, but they do add up to something totally different. Anyway, you can give them a spin and then check out a couple of mp3 files to see the direction they might take you. http://shredlikehell.com

Remember, though, there's no such thing as a magical excercise. If you really want to build up speed, you could do it by just practicing alternate picking chromatic scales. It will make you fast if you do it a lot, but don't devote all your practice time to it. I know too many lead guitarrists who don't know anything when it comes to playing interesting chords, or improvising over dynamic harmony. They can play scales fine, but when it comes to making music, they are deficient. Finger excercises should be one facet of an overall practice regimen, not the focus. But, as for specific excercises, here's one that will get you good at crosspicking across strings
DO NOT SWEEP THIS

This will get you good at alternate picking in a way that picking up and down scales won't, because it gets u good at picking across strings, whichi s the hardest part of alternate picking. You could sweep it too, but that's a different excercise, and a less useful one in my opinion

I don't know about you guys, but this is one awesome excercise. I only did it for a few minutes and at first I felt like I had four index fingers, but now it's coming together and it builds confidence as well.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, i looked all over and can
't seem to find the site.
I am really pulling my hair out, and my main problem is my pinky, i just can't seem to get it loose enough to bend, when the first knuckle bends the second knuckle goes straight, if i bend the second knuckle, the first one straightens out, i am totally frustrated.
Can anyone help.

I am sorry that I am not able to help you with the link for the Finger Exercises Form Hell, but I think that I might be able to help with your coordination.

I have been playing for 10 years and getting my coordination down between hands was challenging at first. I will give you the same advice that was given to me.

First, you need to start slowly. If you begin trying to fly about the fret-board, you'll not only get tired and sore, you will gain little accuracy and potentially damage your tendons and ligaments.

Second, you need to use your ears. Just because you can move your fingers quickly, doesn't mean that you will play that fast. You need to sound the notes correctly. A note that is incorrectly struck is one of the most unpleasant things to hear a guitar do.

Third, my personal advice to you is to work scales. I prefer Major scales. I usually do 3 octaves. It is real easy to tell when you are doing it right because, it should sound like the old Do, Re, Mi.

Its safe to say that we are all looking for the perfect way increase our speed on the fret board, and the best way to achieve success is to use our ears as a guide, leaving our imagination wide open. Once you learn the basics feel free to explore the many possibilities of this instrument, otherwise you'll end up soundinhg too much like others. You know, I wish guitar solos were a big part of maintream today, I would love to hear more guitarists today playing their hearts out, instead of playing what they feel is deemed acceptable by the majority. Someone needs to give this world a wake up call..

I do the 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234 on every string, with alternate picking. i tried luigi's example, but it was real tough so i decided to work on the 1234 excersise i normally do, then when i get enough dex, then i can work the cross-strings
