Description
All you will need to play this song is an acoustic guitar. Today I am playing my Taylor 714CE acoustic-steel string tuned to open G. From low to high, the tuning is D-G-D-G-B-D. I am using a capo on the first fret to play in the key of Ab. You could also tune to Ab instead of using a capo. The tuning would then be Eb-Ab-Eb-Ab-C-Eb.
I am using a thumb pick and palm muting to accentuate the bass notes and wearing a small steel slide on my ring finger for the ending of the song. I am recording direct from my Taylor through a Boss GS-10 for a little reverb and compression.
Side note: The original recording of this song is in the key of A. However, it is likely that due to the primitive recording equipment of the day, the recordings are too fast and thus also to sharp, by approximately half a step. After listening to both the original recording and a slowed-down version, I agree that the slower, Ab version sounds more natural, and so I am playing the song in Ab. If you decide to play with the original recording or in the key and tempo of the original, put your capo on the second fret, play in A and increase the tempo by about 6 clicks.
