a friend of mine want's me to help him learn how to play the guitar, which I'm excited about. I know how to get him started with the basic's and all, but just like any beginer is, I'm sure he's going to want to learn a song as soon as possible. What I want to know are what would be some good beginner songs to help get him started and to keep him motivated? Thank's so much for your suggestions.
extremely easy songs?

applies of course what he likes to listen. As I started I liked to listen to Nirvana, so their songs kept me motivatet(Come as you are is a good one to start)

he likes everything from modern hard rock to country, and anything in between. popular/familiar songs would probably be a better choice because it would help him if he tries to play something and a non guitar player say's "hey you're playing 'such and such song'." I've been too busy trying to get things organized as to how I'm going to go about helping him to think of some real easy songs. Again, thanks for your help!

Green Day has some fairly simple riffs, using chords. CCR is good to get strumming down, and their riffs aren't that bad. Alot of old 60's pop/rock stuff is simple.
Electric Guitars are the inspiration for cries of "Turn that damn thing down"-Gibson website

does anybody have any tips or suggestions as to how I should go about teaching him?

queensryche have a lot of nice acoustic stuff which aint to hard to play..
as for the teaching: Just teach him what's the best way for him to learn. If he needs you to show him 10 times, just show him.
But it's gotta be clear you aint teaching him to play guitar, he is teaching himself, your only helping.

"Lets seeā¦ well I play the guitar and when I'm not playing the guitar, I think about playing the guitar. My other favorite instrument, is the guitar and if I aspired to play any other instrument, it would be the guitar...
I canāt sing so I sing through my guitar. So when the sound guy says: āYour guitar is too loud!ā I think: "Why does he never say that to the vocalist?"

You should know how to teach.
Just take everything you learned in the wrong order, and put it in the right order.
I tell you what, if I could go back in time and start over, I would've done things much much differently with my learning. I stayed away from scales and theory the first two years of playing. What a set back that was!!!

Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

What you do is set up a curling iron....make it nice and hot, everytime he makes a mistake burn him with it...garanteed he'll show up the next week knowing his ****, or you'll end up in jail, one or the other.
For songs, I like to use Stand by Me and/or Knocking On Heavens Door for starter songs. One by U2 is a nice easy one also.

HAHAHA! How's that for motivation?
I'd start him off learning open chords, and simple riffs. Might I suggest the opening riff to "Smoke on the Water". It's easy and catchy.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

Pantallica1 that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I've never had the first lesson on the guitar and I've been playing for about 9 years. I've just been taking some time thinking back on what would have helped me when starting out. I still know nothing about scales and theory, so I'm just here to get him started.
