Where to go from here

Hi Ive been using guitar tricks for 4 months now.

Finished the guitar fundamentals 1&2 which were good

started with the rock course but i find it very difficult to keep up. It's like an inbetween course is missing. 
i feel stuck and don't know what to do next. 
can someone help?

A few ideas -

1.  Try the Blues Course.  Blues (generally) doesn't always require the technical virtuosity that much of rock demands.  You may find, as I did, that after finishing the Blues course, I can actually jam a bit and my ear is a lot sharper picking up chord progressions.  Since rock was (and is!) heavily influenced by the blues, all of the techniques and information you pick up there will directly transfer to your rock playing.  No way to loose here!


2. Maybe try some of the Artist studies.  Pick a few of your favorite guitarist and throw yourself in the study.  You'll find that some of the stuff you can do but, if you're like me, you'll also find a lot of things that need work.  You can then browse/search through the extensive (!) content to build up the skills you require.  Need work on bending?  There's something for that.  Not fast enough?  Plenty of technique drills to improve speed.  The Artist Studies also in themselves sound pretty damn good.  I was in a guitar store, played one of the Eric Clapton artist study drills and drew a small crowd in the process.  Pretty satisfying considering it took me about 6 weeks of daily work to nail it but nail it I did.


3. Dive into the content.  Choose something you find challenging (sweep picking for me!) and dig out all of the content you can about it.  The really cool thing is that many topics have been covered by a number of instructors who are teaching the same thing but coming at it from different angles.  It's like having your own panel of experts at your disposal.  The fact that you can directly speak to these folks through the forum to ask direct questions is so 'effin awesome!  Where else can you get such a thing?


4. Create a set list of appropriately difficult songs and learn to play them just as if you had a club gig.  "Appropriately difficult" is the key term here.  The main thing is to be able to sit down a play 5 o 6 songs in a row as if you were playing for an audience.

Plenty of place to go, for sure.

Main thing is to have fun!  No need to hurry.  Whatever you're looking for will be there when you get there.

Congrats on finishing GF 1 & 2.  What you do next depends on your goals & skill level.  What exactly are you struggling with?

First & foremost, start learning songs you love.  You need to find something that motivates you enough that it is it's own incentive to keep practicing & learning.

So, learn the simplest possible version of a song.  Some way to get through the song form, even simplifying parts along the way.  Make a note of parts that are beyond your current skill level & set time aside to learn those skills or techniques.  Gradually add them in as you are able.

The Made Easy versions of songs are a great way to do this.

Be patient with yourself when working through the rock course.  Every guitar learner hits a wall.  Your skill level plateaus for a while & you have to do enough repetitious practice until those new skill become second nature.
