Can we play melody easily for any songs without seeing the tabs by the use of scales Or is it difficult to get the melody easily?

A melody is a series of notes, usually within a particular key (scale) arranged in a particular and hopefully pleasing sequence. Is it easy? Not for most people. Good songwriters, musicians, arrangers, etc. have a more natural facility for it, though.

Staying within a particular key/scale, you should be able to, if only by trial and error, find the melody for any song that you're working with, tabs or no tabs. If you have a good ear, this will be pretty easy. If you don't, it'll be harder, but still doable.

I find it a very fun way to practice scales and creating melodies using a backing track.[br]Just search youtube for something like "A major scale backing track".

Hey spcharles24,

Most melodies (in general!) will use notes from a set scale, as you said.

The trick is that it's selective. Sometimes melodies move Step-Wise (C-D-E-F-G) and sometimes they move with Leaps (C-E-G). If the note goes UP, you don't always know exactly how many notes it's skipping upwards. You'll get better at this with more experience.

But YES, using a basic scale (for example Major or Minor) is a GREAT way to help predict where a melody is going to land under your fingers. I do use this all the time when learning a melody.

Yes, you can play the melody for songs without seeing tabs or notation. Yes, most melodies are based on a scale.

Is it easy? That depends on each individual's level of training, experience & ability!

This is why musicians are supposed to practice scales, finger exercises & ear training: in order to acquire the knowledge & skills required to play melodies & everything in music.

In these tutorial I explicitly focus on how the notes of a melody can be thought of as a scale degrees & how they suggest the possible chords & harmonies.

In these tutorials I teach some basic classical melodies that you can apply these ideas to.

In this tutorial I explain what ear training for intervals is, how it works & practical examples. In lesson 9 I show examples of popular melodies as scale degrees.

Hope that helps!
