So I have been trying to play my electric guitar standing up with a strap. And quickly found out that its a totally different animal when you play this way versus sitting down and playing. its like your playing without looking at your fretts. Any advice on this.?

My advice is to practice a lot while standing! :) You're right that it can be a different physical approach. I also tell students to use their strap while sitting. And adjust the strap so that the guitar is in the same position regardless of whether you are standing or sitting.
I explain & demo this at about 3 minutes in this lesson.

Hope that helps!
Hello. I'm a beginner and had exactly the same issue. I noticed though that when I was sat down my guitar was at a certain hieght on my chest, when I stood up it was a few inches lower. I shortened my strap to lift the guitar and hey presto it was 95% better. Still not the same as sitting down but at least I can reach the chords etc I found easier sitting down. Simple solution for me so might be worth a try.
I see no reason to stand up ... but I agree .. its kind of different. I hope to get cool sounds while sitting... this will satisfy me totally
I find that standing makes it much easier for me to sing while playing guitar.
Captcha is a total pain in the........
My unofficial sitting/standing protocol: If I'm actually learning something, I sit. If I'm just playing for fun and wailing away, I stand.
Yes, I know..very technical....
Playing while you are sitting allows you do develop a bad habit of leaning the guitar so it is facing a bit upwards so you can see. The reason why it's a bad habit is it compromises your leverage fretting notes and grabbing chords. Christopher demonstrates this in one of his fundamentals lessons and talks about the "axis of leverage" or "axis of power" (I forget the exact term).
When you stand, you can't turn your guitar towards yourself, so you are forced into a more proper posture.
I started practicing standing up when I started playing in groups where I had to stand and play. It was a challenge at first but I adapted quickly. Now I will sit if I am going through a lesson, and I do that just because it's easier to control my PC that way. Otherwise, I'm always standing.
