No surprise here but a cautionary to the younger troops who still have the chance to protect their hearing before it starts to degrade.

"It takes a lot of devotion and work, or maybe I should say play, because if you love it, that's what it amounts to. I haven't found any shortcuts, and I've been looking for a long time."

A very important topic.

I always carry a pair of ear plugs when playing or attending a show in case it gets too loud. Our ears are the most important instrument we have. I'd suggest to anyone to get used to wearing ear plugs or getting some custom molded ones if you're thinking about making music your full time passion.

Food for thought

Well, I'm "hear" to tell you..
Hearing aides are not cheap. For a moderate set will cost the price of a top end guitar. Not Sweat proof or dust proof.
Also the batteries. Not expensive, but adds up. There is also keeping up with the LITTLE things.. Removing for shower and activities where one sweats.
One went out in warranty. I lost one from constant sweating. Past warranty. Repair would be $200 -$300 with six month warranty hundred.
Water and dust proof available now, but there goes that custom guitar.
Sorry to bore everyone, but ear plugs are just a whole lot cheaper..

Plenty of oder rock stars have trouble with their hearing. Pete Townshend from The Who is a good example, but I think he blames Keith Moon for using Cherry Bombs to blow up his drum kit!
