Could basses be shorter ?

I've often wondered if Electric basses could be re- designed with a shorter neck.
i was thinking that they would probably have to have thicker strings ?

But I don't know ?

Tuning shorter strings to bass pitch means making them thicker and/or allowing for the slop that results from the lower tension.

That means higher action, and more neck-bow, which might not be popular with players.
