Description

This funk example demonstrates a couple of different E minor 7 to E minor 6 movements in various positions around the neck. The minor chord with the major 6th oozes funk. The reality is that a lot of the time a minor tonic chord with a major sixth is actually implying the IV chord. It ultimately depends on what the bass note is implying; and in funk you might not be the guy playing the root. You can hear this type of approach in many Prince songs, Parliament, Funkadelic, and other funk artists.
