Description

This is a tutorial series covering some basic, introductory classical guitar techniques of the left hand.

The essential characteristic of classical style guitar is multiple, simultaneous sounding voices. This means there is at least two melodic lines of notes happening at the same time. Or a melody with accompanying harmony notes, or chords.

In most other styles, pop, rock, blues, country, the guitar's role is one of lead or support. And there is another instrument to cover the other parts that the guitar is not currently covering.

So, a great deal of classical style guitar technique is focused on
clearly articulating the different melodic info, voices or threads.
Even though you are playing all the notes on one instrument, it is important to focus on developing the ability to make the upper melody line a little more pronouced or noticable than the bass line or inner chord tones.

This is called polyphony or homophony. Polyphony is music consisting of two or more independent, simultaneous melodic voices, as opposed to an instrument playing with just one note at a time. Homophony is music consisting of one main melodic voice accompanied by chords or supporting harmony notes.
