I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a G6. Maybe leaving the high E string open?

--0-(e)-(6)---------

--0-(b)-(3)---------

--0-(g)-(1)---------

--0-(d)-(5)---------

--2-(b)-(3)---------

--3-(g)-(1)---------

If that's what you mean, then yes! You should definitely make time to keep working on the standard open G chords, but any substitution like that is fine while you are building your skills. If it helps you get going & build some strumming skills for rhythm & play some basic songs, then do whatever it takes.

In fact there are quite a few workarounds to the G chord, or any chord, because there are many ways to play any given chord. Every major or minor chord only requires the 1st, 3rd & 5th from it's parent scale.

For example all of these are options for voicing the G major chord.

This one has all the notes you need, but has a low bass sound because you are only using the low strings.

----------------------

----------------------

----------------------

--0-(d)-(5)---------

--2-(b)-(3)---------

--3-(g)-(1)---------

This one doesn't require any fretting! But you have to avoid strings above & below.

----------------------

--0-(b)-(3)---------

--0-(g)-(1)---------

--0-(d)-(5)---------

----------------------

----------------------

This is a fun beginner one, because it has all the notes you need & is pretty easy to strum.

--3-(g)-(1)---------

--0-(b)-(3)---------

--0-(g)-(1)---------

--0-(d)-(5)---------

----------------------

----------------------

Use the simplest one possible to get going. Play music with it. Make time to keep learning the other voicings.

Hope that helps!
