KISS

A chord is a harmonised group of three or more notes played simultaneously.

The simplest chords are three note triads comprised of the root, 3rd & 5th. Chords may contain more than three notes or the member notes may be at different intervals from the root note.

The red circles in that Chord Finder diagram indicate the note the tonic or root note of a particular chord.

The white circles are member notes comprising the chord.
