What's up? It's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Rock & Roll Band" as made famous by Boston. This is a classic rock anthem with all the essential ingredients: soaring vocal melodies, and guitars layered into a powerful arrangement with crunching rhythm riffs and screaming harmony lead licks.

There are 4 guitar layers in this tutorial. A crunch rhythm guitar provides the foundation of the tune with some great riffs throughout. There are also three lead guitar layers that play memorable melodies and scorching classic rock licks. All of these guitars appear throughout the tune creating a rich tapestry of sound that became an industry standard of how to multi-layer guitars in the studio.

The opening riff is iconic and a great way to start a tune with such a powerful riff. The verse riffs are classic rock through and through, built on early-rock cliches, but with a modern songwriting and production approach. The chorus section features a crunching chord progression based off the relative minor, complete with a soaring lead vocal. The guitar solo section is short and sweet, but features some killer rock licks and harmonized leads. There are also some great harmonized leads in the outro that help bring the track to a big climax.

For the single guitar performance of this song, you'll play the crunch rhythm guitar parts, switching over to the lead guitar for the prechorus melodies and the solo.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about power chord based riffing, barre chords, guitar layering, classic rock licks, and harmonized leads. We are in the key of E major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 137 BPM.
