In this lesson I'm gonna show you how to play the intro and the main riff of this song. This is a simple 4-note riff, so it's all in the attitude and in the timing!

The basic harmony in this section revolves around a B Minor, A major, E major, and F# major. This is where you listen to the movement of the bass: the first two chords are played on the root notes, and the second two chords are played with the third in the bass. These are just inversions of the E and F# major chords. Notice that when you have the 3rd in the bass on the F# chord, it's a Bb note. This functions as a half-step leading tone back to the B minor.

However, the main riff is a repeated figure that stays the same in the upper register: the chord movement happens underneath this riff. This is a "reverse suspension". What you will often hear in chord movement is chords changing in the upper harmony over a pedaled bass note, which "suspends" the chords. In this song, it's the opposite.

The main riff itself is simple, pure funk! Snappy with ghost notes, with a clean tone.
