Many songs have chord progressions that stay on one chord for a long time. If the riff is strong enough, it sounds as if the progression of the song is moving. A riff takes that chord progression and gives the sense of movement and drive.

Here we'll take a single open E chord and create a riff using muting, strumming and arpeggiation to give an ordinary progression the drive to push a song forward.
