In this genre tutorial we look at punk guitar stylings as heard in three of the originators of the genre: The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash. I'll be trying to define the stylistic signatures of these icons of punk and underground rock, which should give an insight into this music.

At first, it might seem a little strange to talk about technique with respect to punk music, so right out of the gate it might be ironic that we're doing this at all. In large part, punk music was a reaction to the idea that you had to be a great musician in order to get your point across. Before the onslaught of bands like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash (and many more), musicianship had become a virtue in and of itself, leaving the primal elements of rock and roll behind.
