The vibrato lessons here and elsewhere on the web are not very helpful. There is almost nothing on actually how to practice and build up to a good vibrato technique. Its like showing someone a Van Gough painting and handing them some paint and a brush.

Vibrato, especially for right-handed people involves a slow and steady retraining of the brain. It involves a rapid succession of a bend and relaxation - a very unnatural motion to do more than a couple of times in a row, especially with the non-dominant hand. The push or pull action fights the relaxation that's needed to return the string back to the unbent note. This applies to voice, violin, etc.

So I would like to see a detailed lesson on practicing and working up to a solid vibrato, not just a demo of how it looks once one has mastered it.

I'm not sure what your skill level is, so I'm going to link some tutorials in the hope that you can find something helpful in them.

It would also be helpful to know what style or songs you are interested in. I could point you to songs that might contain that kind of technique so you could see it in action.

[quote=paullebow]So I would like to see a detailed lesson on practicing and working up to a solid vibrato, not just a demo of how it looks once one has mastered it.

This first tutorial is aimed at the basics of vibrato, what it is, how to do it, different ways to apply the technique in the context of guitar playing.

Vibrato & Bending

These next 2 are from the Blues & Rock course. They are aimed at using technique specifically aimed at those styles.

Blues Vibrato

Rock Vibrato

This tutorial is aimed at leaning very basic blues licks. In lesson 8 I really focus on the basic mechanics of using vibrato to change the pitch of a string in a blues lick. The idea here is learn a physical technique & immedately have a way to apply it.

This last tutorial is really about the most classic blues lick there is! But in the context of teaching the lesson I really focus on the bending in the second lesson. So, that might help you.

Hope that helps! Please ask more if necessary & best of success with your vibrato!
