By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.
Laney amp ?
My friend has found a laney 100watt amp. It has two speakers each giving out 50watts. They will sell it to him for £100. I dont know what model it is but from what i've said does anyone think thats a good deal ?

I'd not touch it with a barge pole !
I had a Laney "Mighty Fifty" in the early eighties and it was rubbish.

Laney makes some reliable stuff these days, so how old it is makes a difference. John Lowery of Marilyn Manson uses a laney VH100r and it get smashed and set on fire and thrown around and other such undesirable stuff, and it keeps on playing.
I would be pretty skeptical of a 100 watt amp for that little. There just might be a reason someone doesn't want it.

i had a laney wasnt bad but it was only 60watt an cost bout £250 so i would be dubious on buyin it. but listen to it to see if it sounds good as just because it has 2 speakers an 100watts will not make it sound good! an check with the shop for a return policy or warranty incase it does break down after buying it. if you get neither of these i wouldnt bother as it could be a problem amp theyre trying to off load onto you.

We will probably test it out for him when he gets his new guitar.
