Hello I consider myself a beginner to intermediate player looking to get better.  Some of the introductory lessons don't appeal to me since I am past that.  Where and how would the best path for me to take.  I like classic rock. Tend to play more rhythm style and looking to expand and get away from just strumming songs.  Been playing on and off for 40 years and definitely have more time on my hand.

Thanks for any advice on how to best use the tool.

Welcome!

There's a lot here, so there are a number of ways to jump in.

  1.  Level 2 of either (or both) the rock or blues tracks.

  2. Go to the Artist studies portion of the website, find a favorite guitarist, work your way through.

  3. Pick some of the higher level songs available (after a few you'll get a general feel for the difficulty level).  When you run into a technique issue (fingering, bending, whatever) use search to go through the extensive (!) content for that particular skill and work on it.

  4. Think like you've been booked for a set, choose the songs to fill that set(s) and then work the hell out of the songs until you can nail them.

  5. There are a lot of what I think of as "jump off" points that lead you to all kinds of cool places:  Ander's weekly video check ins, going through the "news" stuff that they publicly post on you tube.  Go through the "techniques" section and try something new (sweep picking for me).  Even though it may not be your thing, you may hear something that inspires.

True that the sheer amount of stuff here can be intimidating but it doesn't take long to learn your way around.

Hey & welcome!  Sounds like your best bet is the Rock Style courses & pick some songs to learn.

Regarding general advice, there are 3 primary categories of tutorials on GT.

1. Core Learning System. This is an integrated step by step curriculum of lessons that start at absolute beginner. The idea here is to isolate & streamline the cirriculum all in one step-by-step process.  This starts at the Fundamentals, then advances through the style course(s).

If you select experienced you will get the style courses highlighted & appropriate links below.

There are also collections of tutorials aimed at specific topics.

2. Song Catalog. This is all the songs GT has the secured the rights to teach.

3. Instructor Directories. These are more specialized topics, sometimes organized in sub-categories. You can view the instructors & their specialty here.

For example, I have over a thousand lesson on various topics, organized by topic or focus. In general, these are for diving deeper into any given concept or technique. They are not necessary per se to the streamlined core learning system, but will help once a student develops more interest in a certain style or technique.

At any level you should look for songs you enjoy, want to play & are close to your skill level. After all, that's why we learn all these ideas & skills, in order to play music! And that happens in the form of songs!

Quite often in the process of learning a song is when you will discover some new concept or technique that you have to learn in order to play the song & improve your guitar playing in general. Or you find a weak area in your knowledge or skill that needs practice & improvement. That's when the more detailed tutorials can help.

Most importantly, if you have a question about a certain topic, or how to do some skill, please ask! The GT database of lessons is enormous! That's one reason the forum is here, to help you find the resources you desire.

Hope that helps.  Best of success!
