Tom, This song is great and you play it great as well. I have been in the wood shed for a month trying to get this down. I would like to add a lead that would be befitting a song like this. Can you give me any ideas. This is my first bluegrass songs and i'm just not comming up with anything that i would add to the songs quality.

Hey there John,

Yes, I love this classic piece! I would say that if you're working on improving on it to "play over the chord pregression". Meaning, use the chord tones/arpeggios to make you improvisation thematic. You could take a scalar approach, but the only sclae that will kind of work all the way through is E blues and that is limited. You can change modes as the chords change : E7= Emixo , Edim = E Blues , A7= Amixo , B7= B Mixo. This can be a lot of work. I tend to use all of the above for the most musical approach! You might also check out what other people have done solo wise over it for inspiration :) I hope this helps.

Good luck, Tom~
