Is This The Future of Electric Guitar?

Is this the future of electric guitars? The answer is no, Jammy is not the future of electric guitars but it might serve those who want a small, travel guitar for practice. And it actually looks pretty impressive.

What is Jammy guitar?

Jammy is a MIDI practice guitar with a 15-fret neck and at just 17 inches long when it’s fully extended, it’s also a great option for travel. The project started on the crowd-funding site IndieGogo and was fully funded by 545 backers on November 2, 2017.

The Jammy can be split into two parts for mobility, and features a number of enhancements usually not found on standard electric guitars. Since it’s a digital instrument, tunings can be changed with the mobile app, string tension can be adjusted to suit any playstyle, there are onboard effects and tones to choose from, a 3.5mm headphone output as well as a jack for standard instrument cables, touch sensors and more. All of this is powered by a battery pack that is rated to last over 4 hours.

What is a digital guitar?

Having a digital guitar means the sound of the instrument is not made when a string vibrates. Jammy has built-in sensors on the fretboard and strings so when you hold down a fret and strum, the sensors will send that information to the processor, and then the processor produces an audio signal. The Jammy was awarded Best in Show at this year’s Summer NAMM 2018 and there are currently two versions up for preorder right now. Customers can preorder the Jammy guitar by itself for $349, or pay $399 for the Jammy guitar, a detachable frame, guitar picks and a USB-C cable.

Keep in mind these are preorder prices. Once the Jammy is fully released, the standard price for the portable guitar will be $449 and $499.

At the time of this writing, preorders will begin shipping November 2018.
